Setting
Our story begins in Selgaunt, a large merchant port and capital of the country of Sembia, located in central Faerun and bordering on the Sea of Fallen Stars. A relatively new, but wealthy country, Sembia is governed by its merchants, and not particularly war-like, preferring to pursue mercantile endeavors and work as mercenaries or adventurers. Possibly the wealthiest city in all of Sembia, Selgaunt is also a capital of fashion and luxury, being home to a community of artists, dancers, and musicians, that contribute to a rich culture that's sought out and valued across Faerun. All that glitters is not gold though, the city is also home to underground drug and flesh trade that city government do little to prevent or regulate. Prostitution is common there, and it's fairly easy to find anything you might need on the black market.

The Sea of Fallen Stars is the largest inland body of water on the continent. The sea serves as a major trade route for the powers of central and northern Faerun, and is well sailed by Sembia's 15,000 sailors, along with the fleets and navies of other coastal nations. More than just tranquil trade waters, in the central part of the sea lies a collection of about sixty rocky islands, called the Pirate Isles, the largest being Dragonisle, which is home to about 4,000 pirates. Because of this, there is a recognized territorial limit of ten miles offshore among all the nations on the Sea of Fallen Stars. Areas of sea further than ten miles from the nearest land were considered neutral territory. Any attacks on shipping within a country's waters were considered to be acts of war, and the bottom of the sea is littered with hundreds of shipwrecks as proof of past disputes.

In addition trading and pirates, the sea is flush with aquatic wildlife, including kingdoms of dragon turtles, aquatic elves, merfolk, and sahuagin, though these races rarely interacted with the coastal land folk.

Lying between Selgaunt and the Pirate Isles are the islands of Prespur, part of the same rocky chain, but with the main town of Palaggar acting as a shipyard and garrison town under the control of Scepters, the city watch of Selgaunt.

Notes
Sea of Fallen Stars is a real location within the Forgotten Realms world of D&D, but the sourcebook also came out over 20 years ago, so we're taking it and making it into something new! Below you'll find links to Wiki entries for various areas, but no need to read too much about histories. The general gist is that characters are taking off from the port of Selgaunt, a wealthy, capitalistic city with vibes similar to The Capitol from The Hunger Games, imagine wealth and opulence with an underbelly of darkness and greed.

Humans and Halflings are the most common races in Sembia, though you're welcomed to play anything that speaks to you. If you've ever been curious about playing something different, like a Water Genasi, or Lizardfolk, this is your chance! Also, you're not required to play a guest aboard the ship, feel free to play crew members, entertainers, stowaways, whatever you're interested in, we can figure it out. Some background ideas that I think could be fun: Charlatan, Courtier, Entertainer, Guild Artisan, Guild Merchant, Noble, Pirate, Sailor, Urban Bounty Hunter. As far as classes, there's room for literally everyone.

My plan is to have an mix of combat and roleplay, with hopefully some mystery and puzzles thrown in. The number one thing, as with all of our prior campaigns, is fun!
